King Shaka International

King Shaka Airport (IATA: DUR IACO: FALE), is South Africa’s newest international airport situated just outside La Mercy in Kwazulu Natal. It was built to replace the old Durban International Airport (IACO: FADN), which is situated in Durban.
Although the original airport could be upgraded to handle more passengers, a study in 2007 showed that upgrading Durban Intl to its maximum proved to be more expensive to run than if King Shaka International was built.
The new airport was built with large aircraft (Boeing 747 and Airbus A380) in mind which the old airport was unable to accommodate. King Shaka’s runway is more than 50% longer than Durbans runway to accommodate the larger aircraft.
