Oppikoppi is a rock festival held each year on a plot of land called the Oppikoppi Farm situwatd just outside Northam, South Africa. This year it fell over the long weekend from the 6th of August to the 9th of August.

The festival involves more than just rock bands. It is also notorious for its awesome camping experience.  You just rock up, find a camping site and setup camp. From there you bring out the drinks (castle, brandy, captain morgan or whatever you fancy), start a fire, braai some meat,  make loads of new friends or explore the area. Its an experience worth trying at least once in your life time.

Oppikoppi attracts people from all corners of South Africa. A lot of people I met where from Johannesburg and Cape Town, and some from Durban, Richards Bay and event Port Elizabeth. These guys make an effort to attend South Africa’s largest and most popular rock festival. But not only does Oppi attract people from different regions, but also people from all professions and all types of people. I met lawyers, accountants, students and even business owners. By types of people I mean, you get your quiet type of people, your shy people and then your party animals who make Oppi what it is.

Now, I have next to no knowledge of rock, I am a clubber, but even for someone like me, it was interesting to see the different bands, to feel the vibe and to be part of the experience. South Africa has a lot of local bands that played at Oppikoppi 2010 such as Cortina Whiplash, Hot Water, Killer Robot, The Narrow, Van Coke Kartel and who can forget Jack Parrow. This year Oppikoppi had a few international bands including the one show that everyone was talking about (before and after): Billy Talent.

For those of who you need a break from the Rock, there is a trance stage that plays awesome clubbing music. Its just a mission to get there as its on the other side of the hill, but worth it.

One thing I recommend is that you should try to go with a group of friends. It just adds to the experience.
